July 2009
At our June meeting Daryl Watterman was selling some magic things he no longer wanted because he was downsizing. He donated the majority of the proceeds to the ring. Quite generous of Daryl - thanks. For July we had a good turnout and were delighted to have 2 past members visit. Josh Farley and his Dad, Dan Farley, were visiting from Branson, Missouri. I saw them at the IBM convention in Nashville and they came to New York from there to visit. It was great to catch up on old times and hear what Josh has been up to in Branson. The ring is planning a fundraiser/public show in October. David Black is doing the major work but it will take the efforts of all our members to pull it off. In August we will likely do a picnic in place of our regular meeting.
For performers we had Nate Hickey perform a card effect called Swink? where spectator signs his initials on corner of face, then Magi takes out indifferent card and signs the back. His initials jump off that card and appear on what turns out to be the spectators card. It was very visual. Next Josh Farley did an effect that was taught by Ed Ellis at the IBM convention a few days ago which involves S choosing card and it gets lost in the deck. Magi then borrows a ring and uses a rubber band around the deck to affix the ring. In a flash the rubber band/ring vanish and when he spreads through the deck the selected card has the ring and band wrapped around it. Gary Freed also did a card trick in which a signature visibly jumps off a card and onto the spectators card, how do they do it?
Richard Krushansky used a jumbo card with pictures of many cards on it. The spectator looked at it and thought of a card. Then he comically produced "Her Card" but when he unfolded it indeed the card she thought of was produced. This was large enough for stage or parlor. On a last note - I had a great time at the IBM convention. I went with Phil Messina who introduced me to many people I knew only by name and he kept me from getting into trouble. The lectures and shows were great. The contests were well done and exhibited some amazing talent.
